Epidemiologic surveillance evaluation reaffirms the importance of CanSpotASF

An independent epidemiologic evaluation of the CanSpotASF surveillance program was conducted between May and December 2024 to ensure the program was meeting its objective of early detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Canada.

AHC contracted Ausvet, an epidemiology company in Australia, to analyze the program’s performance, highlighting key accomplishments and limitations, and offering actionable recommendations for improvement. The evaluation involved a detailed review of program data, engagement with stakeholders, and a thorough assessment of surveillance processes. The findings were presented to the ASF Executive Management Board, the CanSpotASF Technical Committee, and AHC leadership on December 3, 2024.

The evaluation reaffirmed the importance of CanSpotASF and provided a roadmap for future improvements, ensuring it remains a critical tool in Canada’s ASF preparedness strategy.
